Saturday Series: A panel from 2000 AD
“Rogue Trooper: Timeslip”, prog 348, 24 December 1983. Art by Rafael Boluda Vidal
Nice black and white art from Boluda, an expressive, unusual pose to Rogue as he is ensnared by the plant and falls. According to this link and a bad google translation, in May Boluda attempted to paint the world’s largest watercolour. I hope he was successful.

“Anderson Psi Division: Wonderwall part 5”, prog 1049, 1 July 1997. Art by Steve Sampson
I think it’s the mouth that most conveys the palpable sense of fear and horror, but those eyes help.  The light and shading are very effective, and it’s proof that when 2000AD does colour well, it does it really well.

ECBT2000AD have the prelimiary details for the 2000 AD panel at the Cardiff International Comic Expo:

Ok.. here’s what I’m allowed to tell you at the moment…
Next years Cardiff Comic Expo is gonna be a 2 day event running 25-26th February 2012.
They’ve already announced Dylan Teague, Neil Edwards, Patrick Goddard and John M Burns but I’ve just been told I can reveal there will also be a special panel celebrating 2000AD’s 35th year with a “special guest list of creator droids”. Obviously some or all of the above will take part. There’s also a few other names I can’t mention at this stage till they are formally announced.
And presenting this panel…. Iz and Stace from the Megacast!

We’ll keep an eye on this and update with more details when they become available.

“Return to Armageddon part 27”, prog 212, 16 May 1981. Art by Redondo
This isn’t the greatest strip 2000 AD has ever run.  It isn’t the greatest panel Jesus Redondo has ever drawn. However, there’s that shadow across Eve’s face, there’s the shading on her blouse, there’s the hatching on Seeker, and then there’s Eve’s face. Gorgeous.

“Durham Red: Mirrors part 3”, prog 903, 2 Sep 1994. Art by Mark Harrison
A nice vampire twist on a classic romance pose. I love the vulnerability Harrison’s given the image, especially in contrast to the gore.

“Zenith: Phase II part 12; The Parent Trap”, prog 601, 19 Nov 1988. Art by Steve Yeowell
Look at the expression caught on Zenith’s face.  The fear and yet the youthful exuberance.  Look at the angle on that domino mask. Look at the hair, look at the fore-shortening, and look down the barrel of that gun.  But most of all, look at the beauty of the black against the white.
Steve Yeowell on Zenith.  I could look at this stuff forever and a day.  One day Rebellion and Morrison and Yeowell will get their heads together and work out a deal to reprint this, and if we’re really lucky they’ll reprint it at original art size, and then we can really glory in Yeowell’s art. Yeowell really get’s more and more hard done by the longer this is out of print. Never mind that Zenith is his first ever job, the black and white stuff is his masterpiece.  The Titan reprints are quite possibly my most treasured comic books.
Steve Yeowell, I salute you.  The one time I met you, you were such a nice fellow and in my shyness I neglected to buy you the pint you so richly deserve. God bless you!
